Government of Belize officially inaugurates Chunox Polyclinic

An Official Ceremony was held on Friday February 16th, 2018 to officially inaugurate the Chunox Polyclinic . This is as a result of the Government of Belize recognizing the critical role of primary health care services to enhance Belize’s socio-economic development.

The Government funded the completion of the Chunox Polyclinic project at an estimated cost of $979,219.12 through a loan from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) with counter-part funding from Government.

The new Polyclinic will improve primary health care access thereby reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality, water-borne, food borne, and vector borne diseases, communicable and non-communicable diseases, including early detection and prevention of certain health conditions. Thus, making critical achievements in improving the quality of health of men, women and children of Chunox, Progreso, Sarteneja, Copper Bank, Little Belize, Fire Burn and Newland and other surrounding communities.

Presently, basic primary health care services are offered at the Chunox Polyclinic to the communities of Chunox, Progreso, Sarteneja, Copper Bank, Little Belize, Fire Burn and Newland. However, this existing building cannot meet the demands given the rapid expansion of the catchment area, estimated at approximately 11,000 persons.


Some of the amenities of the new Polyclinic is comprised of a one-story reinforced concrete building with an approximate floor area of 5,500 square feet.

The construction of Chunox Polyclinic is in alignment with the National Health Sector Strategic Plan 2014- 2024; and is a testament of the Government of Belize’s commitment to providing universal access to quality healthcare that is accessible, affordable and equitable.

Officials at the event included Minister of Health, Hon Pablo Marin; Minister of State, Ministry of Health, Hon Dr. Angel Campos; Regional Manager-MOH Northern District, Mrs. Maria Monima; Community leaders of Chunox; and the Executive Director of Social Investment Fund, Mr. William Lamb Jr; among others.
