The Ministry of Health partnered with the Natural Resources at a one-day forum to commemorate World Water Day, which is celebrated annually on March 22nd under the United Nations theme for 2017: “Wastewater”.

Official ceremonies were conducted with presentations on the significance of the day and on the theme for this year by the Minister of Natural Resources, Sen. Hon. Dr. Carla Barnett and other committee members. District Health Education Officer for the Belize district, Mr. Shadroact Ariola also conducted a half hour presentation on a WASH Campaign Project for residence of Maskall, Gardenia and Biscayne. This project entails Water Management, Conservation, Sanitation and Hygiene. The Project is expected to commence in March and conclude in June 2017. The Project is being funded through the Social Investment Fund and implemented through the Ministry of Health. Other partners include the Ministry of Education and UNICEF. The National Water Lab had a booth display at the forum sharing on information on water quality testing and other functions of the unit.

An international day to celebrate and mark the vital importance of freshwater was recommended at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The UN General Assembly responded by designating 22 March, 1993 as the first World Water Day. Each year, World Water Day is celebrated on March 22nd, and highlights a specific aspect of freshwater and coordinated by one or more member(s) on behalf of UN-Water.
