"A mental Health service in Belize continues to be equated with institutional psychiatric care and care for the severely mentally disabled. The presence of psychiatric institution seems to be the only important service, for the treatment of mental disorders. While this kind of care is important and attention is given to it, mental health services also include the treatment of less severe mental health problems, the prevention of psychological problems, and promotion of mental health through public mental health services and education. The ability of people to conduct themselves effectively in social, interpersonal and work relationships is considered to be central to health as well as to national social and economic development."
