Adherence Counselor, Northern and Western Regional

The Ministry of Health through the National Tuberculosis Program hereby invites applications for the post of adherence counselor for the Northern Health Region and Western Health Region.

Under the direct supervision of the Public Health Nurse (PHN) and in conjunction with the National Tuberculosis Program, the TB Adherence Counsellor will work to provide and improve overall client access to comprehensive and current medical treatment and

information.

Salary: $27,756 per annum on a Contract Basis

Age Limit: 25-45 years

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Social Work or Nursing with extensive documented training and experience in counseling or documented TB/HIVAIDS training and at least 2-5 years’ experience in counseling.

Terms of reference:

 

A. Promote access to TB testing and TB prevention in the Community

1. Conduct Tuberculosis health education, sensitization and promotion

2. In collaboration with HECOPAB develop, reproduce and distribute brochures on Tuberculosis to the general population

3. Promote awareness on the availability of TB services in the country and disseminate information

through media appearances on topics such as TB/TB/HIV, Latent TB.

4. Participation and promotion of TB services during Health Fairs.

5. Liaise with other organizations for dissemination on health prevention and promotion of tuberculosis

6. Be actively involved with other health departments and carry out health fairs, sensitization of key diseases that affect the population such as Non Communicable diseases or other infectious diseases ( Diarrhea –Influenza ) as per epidemiological profile.

 

B. Improve the quality of services rendered to Tuberculosis patients at the Chest Clinics:

1. Ensure that educational and teaching materials are available at all TB clinics

2. Monitor and ensure that proper infection control measures are being adhered to by health personnel and clients at the TB clinics (use of face mask and other universal health precaution methods).

3. Develop a time line and plan of action for TB activities to be carried out by Chest Clinic in the Health Centers and Other settings (homes for the elderly, prison and congregate settings).

4. Ensure that TB drugs are readily available at all clinics

5. Ensure that reagents and other screening material are available at all times

 

C. Incorporate activities to minimize stigma and discrimination through integration of TB and TB services

expanding services to other at risk groups and facilities

1. Support Public Health and HIV services during Health fairs, booking activities during prenatal clinics and carry out health promotion and prevention of TB in children, TB in HIV positive infants.

2. Liaise with Public Health Department and Maternal Child Health to address maternal cases of TB

3. Liaise with Public Health Department, Maternal Child Health and the CHW to address TB cases in the

Community.

4. Provide support to all departments within the polyclinics and Hospital with in service training on TB or

TB/HIV, TB in Health Care Workers.


D. Monitor client adherence to TB medications, TB/HIV medications and medical follow up of TB Status

1. Ensure access to TB medications and treatment of latent tuberculosis (IPT) in at risk groups via regular

Consultation and home visits

2. Coordinate with Medical Officers and other relevant Health Care providers for the proper management

Of TB clients.

3. Conduct regular training and educational sessions with clients and home providers

E. Maintain and improve reporting with the new tools

1. Update the TB registry on a daily basis

2. Prepare and submit timely monthly reports, quarterly and annual reports

 

F. Any other duties as assigned from time to time

Special Conditions required:

· Knowledge of TB, TB/HIV, MDRTB TB epidemiology and country profile and other information that may be needed for the development of action plans and TB budget.

· Effective written and verbal communication skills ( both English and Spanish)

· Basic knowledge of TB, HIV/AIDS and other health related issues that would improve his/her ability to work with the target population.

· Willing to travel within the Health Region (villages to make home visits) and work beyond the traditional working hours

· Hold a valid driver’s license.

· Highly desirable (Ability to organize and implement training, Leadership training,

· Have a working knowledge of database systems, word processing, power point and Excel
